Kavan Choksi Sheds Light on the Approach to Follow to Build a Resilient Investment Portfolio

Financial markets rarely move in a straight or predictable direction. Rather, they constantly respond to many different factors like government policy decisions, economic data, geopolitical events, global conflicts, inflation trends, and even the general mood or sentiment of investors. Because of these constantly changing conditions, markets may rise quickly at times and fall sharply at others. In the opinion of Kavan Choksi, in such an uncertain environment, creating a resilient investment portfolio becomes extremely important. A resilient portfolio is designed to handle different market situations while still supporting long-term financial goals.

Kavan Choksi Talks About the Approach to Follow to Build a Resilient Investment Portfolio

Resilience in investing implies to preparing for both positive and negative market conditions. Markets can experience sudden downturns, unexpected recoveries, or long periods of volatility. A strong portfolio should be able to absorb these shocks without forcing investors to abandon their financial plans. Instead of trying to predict every market movement, investors often focus on building a balanced strategy that can perform reasonably well in many different scenarios. Such an approach becomes even more important when planning for long-term goals such as retirement. Retirement planning usually spans several decades, and during that time, financial markets will ideally experience many cycles of growth and decline.

Here are two key strategies that can help:

  • Diversify wisely: Diversification implies spreading investments across different asset classes rather than placing all money in a single type of investment. This may include a mix of stocks, bonds, and other asset types, as well as investments in different industries and sectors. When money is distributed across multiple investments, the impact of losses in one area may be reduced by gains in another. For instance, certain sectors may benefit when interest rates increase. Banking and financial companies sometimes perform well in such conditions because higher rates can improve their profit margins. On the other hand, industries like utilities or companies with high levels of debt may face challenges when interest rates rise because borrowing costs become more expensive. By investing in varied sectors, individuals can reduce the risk of their entire portfolio being affected by one economic change.
  • Embrace defensive investment strategies: Defensive strategies put emphasis on protecting capital during difficult economic periods. One common method is investing in blue-chip stocks. These are shares of well-established companies that have a long history of stable earnings, strong financial performance, and reliable management. Because these companies tend to be financially stable, they may perform better than smaller or riskier companies during economic downturns. Maintaining a higher level of cash or cash-equivalent investments is another defensive approach. Holding some cash reserves can provide flexibility during periods of market volatility. When markets decline and investment prices fall, investors with available cash may be able to take advantage of attractive opportunities by purchasing assets at lower prices.

According to Kavan Choksi, reviewing an investment portfolio regularly is also an important practice. With time, not only do markets and economic conditions change, but personal financial goals may also evolve. By reviewing the portfolio periodically, investors can make adjustments to make sure that their investments remain aligned with their objectives.
